An unassigned trip occurs when someone drives a vehicle without being logged into an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) as the driver.
The FMCSA requires Motor Carriers to either assign the trip to the correct driver or explain why the time is unassigned.
To prevent unassigned trips as a driver, you could simply ensure that you are always logged into your ELD when driving and take advantage of the Personal Conveyance or Yard Moves provisions when necessary.
What happens when the vehicle you are in has unassigned trips?
As soon as you connect your ELD to a vehicle you will be notified of any unassigned trips associated with that vehicle. The yellow notification bar will appear both on your Vehicle Connection page as well as the HOS tab and will remain there, until all trips have either been Claimed or Ignored.
Tap on the yellow bar to review the list of unassigned trips by date. Claim the ones that occurred while you were driving the vehicle and ignore any trips that were generated by a different driver.
Once you claim or ignore a trip, you can no longer make changes to it and will need to contact your manager if you need to make any corrections.
Claimed and ignored trips will both disappear from this list once you close the window. If there are no unassigned trips for your vehicle, you will not see the yellow bar at all.
Claimed trips will appear on your logs as Drive time. If any of the claimed trips need to be switched to Personal Conveyance or Yard moves, please contact your manager.
Your manager can also assign trips to you. You will receive those as an Administrative edit. Accepting the edit will insert the trip in your HOS logs and remove it from the Unassigned List.
